With a new school year upon us, one of the biggest questions we get this time of year at Target Training is “how can I fit my dancing and training in with my homework?”
Managing school with dance (and other extracurricular activities) is something most, if not all, student athletes struggle with. And we’ve got a few tips for you on managing your school, dance and training load. Try out a few different methods and see what works best for you!
Target Training’s Tips for Balancing School, Dance & Training
Make a List
Write down everything you need to get done that day, week, or month and check things off as you finish them. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the amount of things you need to do. Writing everything down can help you visualize and be honest with yourself about what you need to complete in a given time frame. And most of the time, once you write it all down, you realize you don’t have as much to do as you thought. Plus, checking things off a to-do list gives you a great sense of accomplishment for finishing a task!
Prioritize
If you have assignments due Tuesday and Wednesday but a test Friday, DO what’s DUE first! Finish the assignments early so you can spend the rest of your week preparing for the test without worrying about finishing other homework. In training, if you’re consistently getting “posture” comments but not “turnout” comments, prioritize your upper body during practice! This isn’t to say you shouldn’t work on your glute strength at all, or completely ignore your upcoming Friday test, but completing tasks based on their urgency can help reduce your stress about completing them at all.
Be Efficient
Wasting time during homework or training sessions is, well, a waste of time. A concentrated, tough half hour practice is always better than a longer practice with more breaks and easier drills. The same goes for studying. Don’t spend time you said you would do homework sitting on your phone with your book open; then you’ll be left with the same amount of homework and less time to do it in. Use the time you set aside for dancing or homework wisely and you might find you’ll get more done than you thought you could!
